Protected trees and conservation areas

Planning applications for TPOs and conservation areas

If your tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it, or your property sits in a conservation area, you can't just start cutting. Work without the right consent risks a serious fine — but the paperwork puts a lot of people off getting the tree sorted at all.

We handle that side for you. We'll check whether your tree is protected, prepare and submit the application to the council on your behalf, and set out the works properly so the case is clear. Once consent comes through, we carry out the work to the letter of what was approved.

Everything we take down has to go somewhere, and the best place for most of it is someone's log burner or flower bed rather than a tip.

We supply seasoned firewood and wood chip from the work we do across Plymouth and the Tavistock area. If you're having work done, say the word and we'll leave your logs cut and stacked, or drop a load of chip for your borders and paths.

Tree work often leaves a gap where something used to be — a fence line that was buried under a hedge for years, or a tired patch of garden that's suddenly the sunniest spot you own.

Do I need permission to remove a tree in my garden?

Often not — but some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or stand in a conservation area, and working on those without consent can lead to significant fines. We can't give legal advice, so check with Plymouth City Council (or your local authority) before work starts — or ask us and we'll help you find out what applies to your tree before anything is booked in.

Can you remove a tree in a small garden?

Yes. Tight terraces, courtyards and gardens with no side access are everyday work for us. We dismantle the tree in small sections, lower them on ropes, and carry everything out in manageable pieces. We'll check the access route when we visit so we can plan and price it accurately.

Do you take away branches and garden waste?

Yes. We chip branches on site and remove the waste as part of the job, leaving the garden swept and tidy. If you'd like logs for the burner or wood chip for your beds, tell us and we'll leave them stacked neatly instead.

How much does stump grinding cost?

It depends on the stump's diameter, the species, and how easy it is to get the grinder to it. Rather than guess over the phone, we'll come and look, then give you a clear fixed price.

How do I get a quote?

Do you work in bad weather?

A bit of Devon drizzle doesn't stop us. High winds, storms and icy conditions can make climbing and lifting unsafe though, so occasionally we'll need to reschedule — safety comes first. If the forecast threatens your booking, we'll let you know as early as we can and sort a new date that suits you.

Do you cover areas outside Plymouth?

Yes — we regularly work in the towns and villages around Plymouth, from Ivybridge and Tavistock to Saltash and Torpoint just over the Tamar. If you're a little further out, ask anyway; for straightforward jobs we're often happy to travel.
